Growing up in south Minneapolis I had several experiences that helped me decided on a degree in Agriculture Education. The foremost experience was working summers on a small dairy farm in northern Wisconsin near the town of Poplar. After graduating from the University of Minnesota twin cities campus in 1984 I worked in the Horticulture –Landscaping industry in northern California for about 2 years until I was hired by the Hawley School District in the fall of 1986. I have enjoyed being able to update my classes as I have experienced the changes in agriculture over the years. My curriculum is based on the idea that agriculture is a viable career for many young people these days. This does not necessarily mean they will be farmers but instead they can explore the possibilities of a career area in agricultural business and marketing or science and technology which are expanding and have a shortage of applicants. My day seldom gets boring teaching a wide spectrum of classes and units such as: Welding, Small Engines, Horticulture, Business Management, Electrical, Plumbing, Record Keeping, Bio-Technology, Soils, Crops, Livestock, Technology and Parliamentary Procedure. I am also responsible to advise the senior high and junior high FFA chapters, which provides an opportunity to introduce students to leadership and award opportunities. I have had several opportunities to improve myself as a teacher through staff development opportunities in Italy, Wyoming, Mexico, Washington D. C. and Maryland. I enjoy teaching and look forward to having your son or daughter come through my door. |
